SharePoint Early Development Q&A

Initial learning and knowledge building for SharePoint sites, including tips, questions, how tos, and ‘things to learn’, early notes and thoughts.

Major/Key Areas to Rebuild/Investigate

  1. Notices
  2. Teaching and Learning (inc SEN Strategies for Staff)
  3. WR Maths Frog sites
  4. Report bullying forms
  5. MUFoundation
  6. Faculty sites
  7. TEMA staff bulletin
  8. WR cover work
  9. LHS careers (multiple sites)
  10. WR LRC site and Virtual LRC
  11. IT Skills
  12. WR/LHS house sites
  13. Sixth Form Transition
  14. WR referrals (e.g. Inclusion)
  15. Calendars (look at ‘add an app’ in settings for Outlook-based calendars. Should be able to embed google calendars similarly to in Frog, once I have ‘site collection admin’ rights)
  16. LHS Coaching Matters
  17. LHS rewards shop

How Tos / Functionality Testing

  1. Embed internal SharePoint sites/pages (i.e. like includes)
Can be done but can’t seem to specify the height, which is fixed at a couple of hundred pixels with a scroll bar – a way to embed content with ‘auto height’ is needed for calendar, notices/content from other sites/pages etc
  2. Can we embed eStream videos? (ANSWERED)
Yes – with eStream’s embed code, assuming the domain is listed as allowed for iframes, which can be set by site owners under the ‘HTML Field Security’ settings for that site (site information > view all site settings > HTML field security (under site collection administration)
  3. Can we embed YouTube videos? (ANSWERED)
Yes! There’s a YouTube ‘web part’ (widget). Tested – works fine.

  4. Nested menu items (ANSWERED)
Click edit on the menu (for edit navigation), click the … menu next to a page and select ‘make sub link’. 3 tier is possible with a ‘cascading’ menu (change the look > navigation)
  5. Create a custom template / ‘site design’ (.aspx)
  6. Investigate Microsoft Forms e.g. report bullying, emailing results etc
  7. Permissions (rules) / admin rights for specific pages/web parts (widgets)
  8. What would a Faculty/Subject site look like? (Teams class lists, twitter feed, link to curriculum etc?)
  9. Analytics
  10. How to delete a news item, add time stamps etc
  11. RSS feeds

Notes

  • Very easy to post a link in the news feed (data auto populated – tested with a news item from the website)
  • SharePoint is written in ASP.NET
  • Using both ‘document library’ and ‘file preview’ web parts, you can create a file viewer with a kind of menu of links
